HBI C-CORE Mentors Wanted
Home Builder’s Institute (HBI) seeks experienced workers from the home building industry to volunteer as mentors for youth in 28 cities in 11 southern states.
HBI’s Construction-Coaching Opportunities to Reach Employment (C-CORE) program matches teens ages 16-18 with adult mentors from any facet of the home building industry who encourage them to consider careers in home building and coach them toward success.
Mentors are paired with a group of three youths and they work alongside each other on local industry-focused community service projects that promote leadership development, community attachment and relationship building. Although the time commitment is usually only one or two hours per week, mentors get something out of the experience too. Studies show their sense of intrinsic personal and professional satisfaction increases, and they enhance their leadership, teaching and training skills through the experience.
HBI C-CORE provides volunteer mentors with training that explains their roles and responsibilities, gives them insight into how to build their mentoring relationships, and builds their skills in effective communication and problem-solving. Continued advice and resources are available after the initial training. Because building a trusting relationship between a mentor and a young person takes time, HBI C-CORE asks mentors to commit a minimum of one year to the program.
In addition to individual mentors, HBI also is seeking businesses to participate in corporate mentoring programs through C-CORE.
