Brick Masonry
A craft dating back thousands of years, brick masonry work varies from laying a simple walkway to installing ornate building exteriors. Brick masons build and restore walls, floors, partitions, fireplaces, chimneys and other structures using brick, precast masonry panels, concrete block and other masonry materials.
Much of the work is outside, physically demanding—bending, lifting, standing, climbing and kneeling—creative in nature. If you like working with your hands and have an eye for detail, brick masonry may be the trade for you!
Training
HBI pre-apprentice brick masonry programs teach skills and techniques employers are looking for in entry-level masons. Skills include:
- Mixing mortar and grout
- Laying lines and grades
- Erecting block and brick walls
- Laying brick floors and stairs
- Building fireplaces, arches and patios
- Using green building techniques to reduce resources and increase the durability of structures
Career Opportunities
Job openings in brick masonry are expected to grow faster than the number of people being trained through 2018. Land developers, brick contractors, general contractors, remodelers and landscaping companies are examples of business that might hire an entry-level brick mason.
HBI graduates earn an average of $9 to $12 an hour in their first brick masonry job. As skills are expanded through apprenticeships or on the job training, so are career options. Here is just one example of a mason’s career pathway:
