YouthBuild USA

The U.S. Department of Labor’s YouthBuild USA program offers low-income youth across America access to housing industry-sponsored career and technical education trades training in their local communities as a first step in building a career in residential construction.

As YouthBuild USA’s technical assistance provider through the Department of Labor’s Technical Assistance Collaborative, HBI shares its almost 40 years of expertise training at-risk young people in the home building trades with organizations implementing local YouthBuild programs.

HBI’s support includes discussing program challenges, providing classroom shop and tool tips and teaching and student mentoring advice. Through its technical assistance, HBI:

  • Establishes reliable connections between YouthBuild and members of the home building industry.
  • Develops a teaching curriculum for construction trades training that incorporates HBI’s Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate Training (PACT) and Residential Construction Academy Series textbooks and instructional aids.
  • Trains instructors to effectively use the curriculum to prepare participants for jobs in the home building industry.
  • Ensures students who complete the program are ready to work on a construction site and have the necessary industry, leadership and communication skills.
  • Updates current tracking and evaluation procedures to ensure students benefit from the training and the program meets expectations.
  • Maintains a user-friendly, web-based resource center where certified instructors track student success.
