National Construction Skills Standards

HBI has collaborated with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) to create the National Construction Skills Standards.

These standards reflect the home building industry’s skill requirements for entry, semi-skilled and skilled levels of job proficiency in the residential construction trades.

They provide a basis for the certification and training of residential construction workers and give employers objective benchmarks to select employees and evaluate training needs.

The standards are available for carpentry; electrical wiring; heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC); plumbing; brick masonry; painting; landscaping; facilities maintenance; green/energy-efficient building and solar.

HBI’s Residential Construction Academy Series of textbooks and instructional materials incorporate the National Construction Skill Standards as do student certification protocols based on the series.

Subject matter experts drawn from across the U.S. home building industry worked with an independent research and measurement organization to develop these comprehensive construction trade training standards.

They are based on guidelines from the National Skills Standards Board (NSSB) and meet or exceed American Psychological Association (APA) and American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards for occupational credentialing.
