For more than 35 years, the Home Builders Institute (HBI) has trained skilled workers in residential construction, promoted the industry as a career and helped the membership address the need for qualified employees.
Originally started as the Manpower Development and Training Division of the National Association of Home Builders, HBI continues its focus on the advancement and enrichment of craft education and training programs that serve the needs of the residential construction industry.
Key Dates in HBI History
- 1967 – National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) awarded first contracts from the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare
- 1974 – Partnership with the Department of Labor’s Job Corps program begins at the Woodstock Job Corps Center in Maryland
- 1983 – HBI officially designated as the workforce development arm of the National Association of Home Builders
- 1994 – HBI Project CRAFT program is started to help adjudicated youth gain sustainable employment in the building industry
- 2001 – HBI Residential Construction Academy established to bridge the critical skills gap that exists within the residential construction industry
- 2006 – Career recruitment and awareness campaign launched to inform students, parents and educators on career opportunities in the residential construction industry
- 2009 – All HBI training is aligned to the new National Green Building Standard™
